Contacts are a distance field

CAD colors a vertex by how close it is to the opposing mesh. Red is touching or intersecting. Blue is out of range. A pretty red bullseye on a stamp cusp in MIP is the assignment. Red on an incline is a lateral interference waiting to chip porcelain.

Mutually protected

In MIP, posteriors take the load. In laterotrusion, canines (or anteriors) disclude the posteriors. In protrusion, anteriors disclude posteriors. Group function shares the working side among several teeth — a legitimate scheme, but a choice, not an accident.

The mandible moves

A static scan pair is one frame. Real occlusion has laterotrusion, protrusion, and a condyle that is not a hinge. Even a simple slider in this lab is enough to show a working contact become a non-working interference.
