What to notice

First permanent tooth to erupt in many children (with the mandibular first molar).
Oblique ridge is the hallmark of a maxillary molar.
Cusp of Carabelli lives on the ML of the first molar — not the second.
Three roots: two buccal, one palatal.

CAD notes

Preserve the oblique ridge when you copy anatomy. It is not a fissure to carve through.
The palatal root creates a palatal undercut. Insertion is slightly buccal-to-palatal.
Carabelli is optional on a crown. Match the contralateral tooth.

Surfaces

Mesial: Toward the midline of the arch. On anterior teeth this is toward the central incisors.
Distal: Away from the midline. The third molar’s distal face is the last surface in the arch.
Buccal: Facing the cheeks. Used for premolars and molars. Facial is the umbrella term.
Labial: Facing the lips. Used for incisors and canines.
Lingual: Facing the tongue. On maxillary teeth this is also palatal.
Palatal: Facing the palate. Maxillary lingual.
Occlusal: The chewing table of a posterior tooth.
Incisal: The cutting edge of an anterior tooth.
